When I grew up in Sweden my mom would always as a evening snack make oven toasted sandwiches. It stuck with me and even though obviously you can be so much more creative this is really, really good. I guess it’s like how I can drink cheap Swedish beer. I grew up with it, so to me it’s “home” and tastes alright!

Anyway.

Here’s my attempt on recreating past evenings but in my view of American style.

The sandwiches:
Bagles
Butter
Green bell peppers
Tomatoes
Pepper jack cheese
Mushrooms

It’s basically a steak sandwich without the steak. Just stack it up. I chose bagles because it’s American and fun. They also taste best amongst American bread when heated up and get the crust crispy. The green bell peppers because they are less sweet than yellow, orange and red.

No pepper jack?
If you don’t have pepper jack cheese you can just cut up a jalapeño and put it together with any mild regular cheese.

I like trying to make my food look pretty, I don’t always succeed but when I do it looks something like this:

Its very simple, it just looks fancy, trust me ;)

What you need:
Italian Bread
Butter
Salami
Your favourite mild cheese (I used Muenster)
Oregano
Tomatoes
Garlic olive oil

How I did it:
I spread butter on both slices of bread (for moisture and for ingredients to stick) and put two slices of cheese on one bread slice. On top of the cheese I put two-three slices of the salami. Cut up about half a tomato for the sandwich and put those slices on top of the salami and top it all off with some oregano. Put the sandwich together and have a frying pan ready on low/medium heat. Sprinkle some garlic olive oil in the pan, it matches this so well! And let fry for a few minutes on each side, either until the cheese melts or until the bread is the beautiful brown colour you want it :)

Fast & easy! And very, very tasty. You could probably replace the oregano with basil for more flavour and even switch the cheese for a good mozzarella and maybe even some sun dried tomatoes to make it more Italian style.

I didn’t know about grilled cheese sandwiches until I came to America and now that I do I added my own twist to them, enjoy :)
